OpenAI Sora Review 2026: The Most Realistic AI Video Generator
Sora can generate up to 60-second videos with stunning physical accuracy. We test whether it lives up to the hype and how it compares to Runway and Kling.

Part 1: The Hook — OpenAI Redefined "Possible" With a Single Video
In February 2024, OpenAI released the first batch of Sora demo videos. I remember my reaction: not excitement, but a mild unease. That woman walking through Tokyo streets, that mammoth running through snow — they were too real. Real enough to make you start questioning the authenticity of every video you see. That is what Sora means: it is not just a better video generation tool, it is a technical answer to the philosophical question of "what is real."
Compared to Runway Gen-3, Sora most visceral first-impression difference is duration and physical consistency. Runway single clips max out at 10 seconds. Sora can generate 60 seconds of coherent video. More importantly, Sora understanding of physical laws — lighting, gravity, material interactions — is closer to the real world than any competitor.
Part 2: Under the Hood — A World Model, Not Just a Video Generator
OpenAI defines Sora as a "world model," and that is not marketing speak. Sora architecture is based on Diffusion Transformer, and it learns not just "what videos look like" but "how the world works." This means it can understand object persistence, causality, and spatial relationships — the fundamental failures of every previous video generation model.
When I tested the scenario "a glass falling off a table and shattering," the Sora-generated video showed glass fragment trajectories, light refraction, and fragment size distribution that all followed physical laws. Runway in the same test produced glass fragments that behaved more like they "looked like shattering" rather than "actually shattering." That gap is the difference between a world model and a video generator.
Part 3: The Reality Check — Waitlists, Pricing, and Those Weird Errors
Sora is still not a fully open product. It is accessible through ChatGPT Plus, but with strict usage limits. The $20/month Plus plan gives limited video generation quota per month, and there are frequent queues during peak hours. If you need high-volume generation, costs escalate quickly.
Human faces and hands remain Sora weak points. In scenes involving close-ups of people, facial expressions sometimes show uncanny distortions, and hand movements occasionally violate anatomy. This is not unique to Sora, but given its pricing and positioning, the flaw is more conspicuous.
Part 4: Survival Guide — How to Use Sora Right Now
Sora is currently best for: concept validation and creative exploration (generate multiple versions of a scene, quickly filter directions), natural scenes and product showcases without human close-ups, projects requiring long coherent video. Not ideal for: content requiring precise human performance (use HeyGen or real filming), commercial workflows requiring high-volume generation (cost is too high).

Independent Filmmaker
Sora is genuinely a paradigm shift for filmmaking. The physical accuracy is unlike anything I have seen. I used Sora-generated footage in a short film that screened at a festival and nobody questioned the AI shots.
Advertising Creative Director
We have started using Sora for concept videos and pitch presentations. The quality is good enough to show clients as proof-of-concept before committing to expensive production.
