Midjourney v7 Review: Still the King of AI Image Generation?
Midjourney v7 dropped with massive quality improvements. We tested it against DALL-E 3, Stable Diffusion, and Adobe Firefly to find out if it's still worth the subscription.

Part 1: The Hook — Why It Is Still Number One
The day Midjourney v7 dropped, my Discord notifications exploded. Not because I follow too many AI channels, but because every designer, photographer, and creative director I know sent me the same screenshot at the same time: a v7-generated portrait with skin texture so detailed you needed to zoom in three times to confirm it was not a real photograph. That is Midjourney moat — not the most features, not the cheapest, but a certain aesthetic sensibility that no other tool can replicate.
I ran the same prompt set through Midjourney v7, DALL-E 3, Stable Diffusion 3.5, and Adobe Firefly. Conclusion: Midjourney was the only output I would use directly in a commercial project without post-processing. That is not bias — that is the reality of workflow efficiency.
Part 2: Under the Hood — Why Its Aesthetic Crushes the Competition
Midjourney training data strategy is its biggest secret. It was not trained on all images from the internet — it used a heavily curated, aesthetically scored dataset of high-quality work. This means the concept of "beauty" encoded in its latent space is closer to the aesthetic standards of top human creative professionals than any other model.
v7 technical breakthroughs come in two directions: first, the maturation of the Personalization feature — the --p parameter lets the model learn your personal aesthetic preferences, generating images that increasingly match your style over time. Second, Style Reference precision has improved dramatically. You can now use a reference image to precisely control the lighting, color tone, and compositional style of the output — not just "vaguely similar," but genuinely precise.
Part 3: The Reality Check — No Free Tier, Discord Interface, Is This 2026?
No free trial. In 2026, this is an increasingly rare stance, but Midjourney has held the line. The $10/month Basic plan gives you only 200 images per month — nowhere near enough for serious creators. The $30/month Standard plan is the real entry point.
The Discord interface is a genuine friction point. I understand its community value, but for professionals who need Midjourney in a serious workflow — generating images in a Discord channel, getting buried by other people outputs, then manually downloading — this process feels out of place in 2026. The web app is improving, but has not fully replaced the Discord experience yet.
No API. This is the biggest limitation for developers. You cannot integrate Midjourney into your own product — only through unofficial third-party APIs that are unstable and violate the terms of service. For anyone building AI image applications, this is a hard blocker.
Part 4: Survival Guide — Alternatives If You Do Not Want to Pay
DALL-E 3 (via ChatGPT Plus): if you already subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, DALL-E 3 is included free. Quality is below Midjourney, but completely adequate for "good enough" scenarios, and you can describe exactly what you want in natural language. Stable Diffusion 3.5: if you have a decent GPU, running SD 3.5 locally is zero cost with unlimited generation. Steep learning curve, but the ceiling is extremely high. Adobe Firefly: if you are in the Creative Cloud ecosystem, Firefly commercial licensing is the clearest of any tool — images can be used in commercial projects without legal concern.

Creative Director
We have integrated Midjourney into our agency creative workflow and it has saved us thousands in stock photography costs. v7 specifically has much better text rendering.
